    Summary

    The purpose of the Public School Security Equipment Grant Act of 2013 is to help school divisions purchase and install security equipment in public schools to improve and ensure the safety of students attending public schools in Virginia.

    School security equipment may include, but is not limited to, the following equipment (and associated installation costs):
    • Intercom systems
    • Security film
    • Technology equipment to support security systems
    • Security door hardware
    • Electronic access control systems
    • Visitor badging system
    • Surveillance equipment and cameras
    • Security scanning equipment
    • Two-way radios
    • Security alarm systems
    • Mass notification telephone systems equipment
    • Security panic systems
    • Security lighting systems
    • Classroom door locks
    • Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) for emergency backup power for the security equipment.

    Additional Information

    The funds are to be used to purchase security equipment that will be installed in eligible schools. Grant money cannot be used to pay for security equipment not specified in the grant application. Each school receiving funding must remain open for at least five years with no planned renovations/additions scheduled during that time that would cause the purchased security equipment to become obsolete.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are local school divisions or regional vocational centers, special education centers, alternative education centers, or academic year Governors Schools serving public school students in grades K through 12. The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is also eligible to apply.

    Deadline Details

    Applications were to be submitted by August 1, 2016. A similar deadline is anticipated, annually.

    Award Details

    The amount of grants provided to each eligible school division may not exceed $100,000 for each fiscal year. As a condition of receiving a grant, a local match of 25 percent of the grant amount is required. The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is exempt from the match requirement.
